Computed tomography - Background information
|
As with conventional X-ray procedures, computed tomography takes advantage of the specific characteristics of X-rays to be transmitted in a different way by different tissues. During spiral computed tomography, the computer-controlled X-ray tube revolves around the patient, transmitting radiation, whereas the examination table continuously moves forward. At the points where radiation is leaving the body, the special detectors measure how strong the radiation is after penetrating the tissue. The measured values are converted into an image, the so-called computer tomogram. The types of tissue characterised by greater permeability (e.g. fat, lungs) are displayed as the dark ones, those with lower permeability (e.g. bones) – as the light ones.
Unlike the traditional X-ray, here we obtain cross-sectional images of the body of higher resolution, we can better display soft tissues and make more accurate statements about the possible pathological changes. However, due to the fact that radiation exposure is higher, if compared to the conventional X-ray, you should carefully consider the application of computed tomography. |

To perform the examination you should lie down on a special table that is slowly moving inside the computer tomograph during the procedure. If you do not feel well, you can contact us anytime. As a rule, it takes less than 10 minutes to obtain sufficient data and to complete the examination.
In some cases, it may be necessary to inject a contrast medium or (with pre-planned abdominal examinations) to take it in advance. We will naturally inform you during the preliminary discussion, if there is a need to do it.
A CT examination is absolutely painless. |
|
Pregnant women should undergo an X-ray examination only in the case of emergency. Please let us know if you are expecting a baby.
It is often required to come to the procedure on an empty stomach. Should it be necessary, we will inform you about it in advance.
In the case a contrast medium should be administered, you will be informed about it in advance and the possible risks will be explained to you. Certain diseases of the kidneys and the thyroid gland as well as allergies may appear to be a contraindication for application of a contrast medium due to possible complications. Please inform us in advance, if you possibly suffer from such a disease. This information is essential to plan the examination.
Please stay as relaxed as possible during the whole examination and pay attention to our instructions concerning your position and breathing.
